Veteran Writer Edie Netto Honored with MCA Kala Puraskar 2024
In a celebration of literary excellence and cultural heritage, the Mangalore Cultural Association (MCA)
of Qatar proudly announces the recipient of the esteemed Kala Puraskar award for 2024: veteran
Konkani writer, Edie Netto. This prestigious accolade recognizes Netto's profound contributions to
Konkani language and literature, affirming his place as a luminary in the literary landscape.
Edie Netto's journey is one marked by dedication and passion. Born in 1938 to the late Amando
Netto, a distinguished dramatist and band master, and the late Francisca Netto, his affinity for the arts
was cultivated early on. His formative years at St Joseph School, Jeppu, and St Aloysius High School
laid the foundation for a multifaceted career that spanned writing, acting, singing, and composing.
Despite joining the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1956, where he served until his retirement in 1993 as a
missile officer, Netto's commitment to Konkani literature remained unwavering. His military service,
including active participation in conflicts like the 1962 China war, 1965 Pakistan war, and 1971 Bangla
war, did not deter his literary pursuits. Even stationed far from his native land, Netto continued to
contribute to the growth of Konkani, exemplifying a profound sense of cultural responsibility.
Netto's literary legacy is vast and profound, spanning over six decades of uninterrupted creativity. He
has penned over 2700 Konkani articles, more than 600 short stories, and 30 poems, alongside
publishing nine books. His oeuvre reflects a deep engagement with the Konkani language and a
commitment to preserving its essence.
The MCA's decision to honor Edie Netto with the Kala Puraskar underscores his immense impact on
Konkani literature. This annual award, instituted in 2013, comprises a citation, a memento, and a cash
component of Rs 1 lac, serving as a testament to Netto's enduring influence and significance within
the literary community.
Netto's accolades extend beyond the Kala Puraskar. He has been recognized with numerous awards,
including the Divo Mumbai Award - 2002, Konkani Sahitya Academy Award - 2005, and Sandesha
Award - 2018, among others. Each accolade reflects the profound respect and admiration for his
contributions to Konkani literature and culture.
The MCA, an organization committed to promoting Konkani language and culture, has been
instrumental in recognizing stalwarts like Edie Netto. Through initiatives like the Kala Puraskar and
Seva Puraskar, MCA celebrates individuals who have enriched the cultural tapestry and served society
selflessly.
As the MCA prepares for the annual event KALOTSAV-2024 on Friday, June 7, 2024, in Doha, the
spotlight will rightly shine on Edie Netto, a literary giant whose impact resonates far beyond the
shores of Mangalore. With distinguished guests and a vibrant cultural program, KALOTSAV-2024
promises to be a celebration of talent, creativity, and community spirit.
Under the dynamic leadership of President Aloysius D'Souza and the dedicated efforts of the
